BROCKTON HONORING WOMEN OF THE YEAR: The 2011 Women of the Year Awards will be bestowed this Saturday on five Brockton residents by the city’s Commission on Women’s Issues and Mayor Linda M. Balzotti.

Yahoo! Buzz ShareThis .“Choosing this year’s recipients was a difficult process,’’ said Lisa M. Rheault-Sliney, chairwoman of the commission. “All the nominees worked hard to make a positive impact on the city, but only a limited number could be chosen.
The award winners are:
■Lovern Augustine, who advocates against domestic violence, coordinates collection of items for women and children affected by it, and was named Mrs. Ethnic New England and Mrs. World Ethnic International.
■Aisha Barlatier-Bonny, who worked with the Haitian Organization for the Advancement of Petit-Goave following the Haiti earthquake last year, and is a board member for Bridgewater State University’s graduate school and St. Joseph’s Manor Nursing Home in Brockton.
■Laronda Campbell started Brockton Youth Cheerleaders in 2001, helping it grow from 10 to 123 members. The team participates in Brockton’s annual holiday parade and performs in nursing homes, churches, and at community events.
■Nadia Gay, president of the Christ the King chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, delivers food to needy families every Saturday, drives elderly parishioners to church, has served as a translator and advocate for Haitians living in Brockton, and volunteers teaching health education.
■Jill Wiley, administrator for the Brockton Cultural Council, is a volunteer at St. Paul’s Table, a local soup kitchen, and minister at Central United Methodist Church.
In addition, Kathleen Mary Mullen will be presented the 2011 Woman of Courage award. She has volunteered at Woman’s Place for five years to assist rape victims, volunteered at St. Paul’s Table, and is president of the Braintree Choral Society.
The awards will be presented at a breakfast at 10 a.m. at the Shaw’s Center, 1 Lexington Ave. Tickets to the event are $20 and are available at Rockland Trust locations throughout Brockton. HABITAT HOSTS CELEB NIGHT: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Plymouth hosted a fund-raising “Celebrity Night’’ Feb. 10 with state Representative Viriato Manuel “Vinny’’ deMacedo, at Alden Park Bar and Grill. Alden Park donated appetizers and gave those who ate there the option of donating five percent of their dinner tab to Habitat.
HISTORICAL SOCIETY HIGHLIGHTING MARION’S PAST: The Sippican Historical Society Museum, 139 Front St., Marion, has a new exhibit on the former Sippican Hotel and Casino. At the turn of the 20th century, the harborside resort hosted an elite clientele of politicians, literati, and business leaders. Among the guests were President and Mrs. Grover Cleveland, who had a summer home in town; author Henry James; illustrator Charles Dana Gibson; and actress Ethel Barrymore.
The exhibit includes images, documents, and objects from the resort, a Marion landmark in the Gilded Age. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and admission is free. For information, call 508-748-1116.
BUSINESS BRIEFS: Kristen DiFolco of Dedham was named a senior staff accountant at Kirkland Albrecht & Fredrickson LLC in Braintree. . . . Gerard F. Linskey of Marshfield has joined Scituate Federal Savings Bank as chief financial officer, bringing with him more than 30 years of banking experience. . . . Jeffrey Liebman was named president of Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. He joins the hospital from Beth Israel Deaconess Healthcare in Needham, where he was president and chief executive officer since 2003. Before that, he held several senior executive positions. Good Samaritan is a member of Steward Healthcare System, the parent company of Caritas Christi Health Care.

Mayor Balzotti announces nominations are open for
Women of the Year
Women’s Commission now accepting nominees for 2011 awards
Brockton -- Mayor Linda M. Balzotti and the City of Brockton’s Commission on Women’s Issues are proud to announce that nominations for the 2011 Women of the Year Awards are now open.
“This award is a great way to honor residents who are working to make Brockton the best it can be,” said Balzotti. “It also works to inspire the next generation of future leaders to become active in their community, which is priceless.”
The woman being nominated must be age 16 or older, a Brockton resident, and someone who has made a significant contribution outside of their job to the Brockton community within the last year. Award recipients will be judged on their contributions made to residents of the Brockton community or the Brockton community in general.
Nomination forms are available on the city web site and in the Mayor’s Office located on the first floor of City Hall, 45 School St.
Nominations must be received by Friday, Feb. 11th, 2011.Please attach no more than a one page essay explaining why you are nominating this woman for the award.
No nomination will be accepted without a completed nomination form and attached essay. Email nomination forms and essays are preferred. Send all email nomination forms and essays to womenscommission@cobma.us.
The recipients of the Women of the Year Awards will be honored at the 2011 Women of the Year Award Breakfast scheduled for Saturday, March 5th at the Shaw’s Center, 1 Feinberg Way, Brockton.
